Cut and Style

Grace had her very first haircut this afternoon.  Sarah, my stylist and our neighbor a few doors down, was the one we chose for this challenge.  Each time I've brought up haircuts to Grace it has created much anxiety and fear.  But, in talking with her over the last couple of weeks, I felt like it was something she could handle.  She met Sarah over the summer as we were walking around our block and she took to her right away.  And, when I talked it over with Sarah last week at my hair appointment, she seemed up for what could be a challenging, little client.

When we arrived at the salon today, Grace was excited to see Sarah again, and to have a sucker, which I promised her she could have.  We both got a good laugh over the fountain in the entryway.  It had a renaissance-type woman coming up out of the water with an only partially-covered behind.  Her "bare buns" were showing, which "cracked" us both up. "Bare-buns, bare-buns!"

I plopped Grace down in Sarah's chair, and I thought we were in the clear, but as soon as Sarah tried to put the smock around Grace's neck, she lost it.  I had to hold Grace on my lap, and Sarah had to promise not to use the smock, or spray her hair with water, or blow-dry her hair.  After we got all of that out of the way, things were fine and the haircut went on with out incident.

I had hoped to get some before/during/after photos of the process, but with Grace on my lap it didn't work out that way.

A few cute "after" shots...

After her cut, we went over to Granny and Grandpa's house to spend time with the Abbott clan.  Dave's brother and his family are in town and Grace has been having a BLAST playing with her cousin Megan.  She even allowed her to spray and style her hair.  I think Meg should have done the cut, too!

Our Christmas, 2010

I was so excited for Christmas this year.  It seemed like it took forever to get here.  We watched plenty of Christmas movies, and read all of our Christmas stories countless times.  Finally, the day arrived.  Celebrating with Grace was so much fun, although she did have a typical two-year old's attention span, opening two gifts and then wanting to move on to cooking in her kitchen and eating candy canes and suckers.  (When I asked Grace what she wanted for Christmas, a sucker and a candy were the only things on her list. How could I let her down?)  We didn't go too crazy this year--Grace only received a few gifts from us (partially because I had a feeling she's be getting quite a bit from the grandparents).  What a change from last year though, when she had very little interest in Christmas. This year we started planting little seeds of what Christmas is really all about (explaining the importance of helping others in need, why we celebrate Christmas, etc).  Next year, as her understanding improves, we can do more to demonstrate these principles.

I struggled with how to handle Santa Claus this year--he was present in many of our books and on television, but we never discussed him or told Grace that he'd be stopping by our home.  We thought about visiting him at the courthouse downtown, but never got around to it.  I guess my view is why encourage her to "believe" in someone who isn't real when Jesus is very real, and we're praying she will choose to believe in Him someday.  Some people can do both Santa and Jesus, and maybe things will change next year in that respect.  But, for us, the core of Christmas will always be Jesus' birthday--the day God sent His son to earth to reconcile us to God if only we  1) come to terms with our sin and ask God to forgive us  2) Believe in Jesus and what He did for us, and  3) Demonstrate our changed hearts by pursuing Him in our lives.  I bring this up not to preach, but out of love.  I did not understand what it really means to be a Christian until a few years ago. That we all are imperfect (especially me), we all screw up and do stupid things (especially me), and we all desperately need a relationship with God (especially me).  And the good news is that we all can have one.  God did that for us through Jesus.  He loves us despite all of our faults and failures.  He'll take us just as we are.  But we have to accept His gift--Jesus. And He's something worth celebrating.  That's what Christmas is about--to me.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Before we came downstairs on Christmas morning, we read a little bit about Jesus' birth in the bible from Luke 2, then we excitedly went to get Papa. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity for Papa to put his contacts in (he broke his glasses), we all headed downstairs to start opening gifts. It was a little anticlimactic because most of the gifts had been wrapped and under the tree for a few days.  But we enjoyed watching Grace open her new baby doll and stroller.  Grace took to her right away, wheeling her around our living room and kitchen.

After our family Christmas, we packed up and headed for Grandma and Grandpa's house to celebrate with them, and Uncle Seth and Ahguei--Grace's new bff.  Mom and Dad were, as always, overly generous with their gift giving.  Mom's gifts to us were impeccably wrapped and decorated, while Dad's were not so (I definitely take after my Dad).  Grace colored pictures for Uncle Seth and Ahguei, and made special wrapping paper for many of the gifts.  Some of my favorite memories will be of watching Grace "cook."  She all but emptied the pantry and set up her kitchen on the living room table, whipping up a wide array of delicacies for everyone to sample.  I think we must watch a little too much Food Network at our house.  I'm waiting for her to start saying, "Hey, Y'allll!" like Paula Dean.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas full of family and joy.  We're off to the "Norwegian Auction" at Aunt Deb and Uncle Don's place this afternoon.   Grace is excited to get to see Riley again, and to walk on the balance beam that she found out is in Aunt Deb's basement.  It's sure to be a fun afternoon...

Books of the Month - December 2010

We broke out the winter and Christmastime books after Thanksgiving, and have been really enjoying them since.  Two of them seem to have topped the list:  The first, The Snowy Day, is an old favorite from my childhood.  I love the simplicity of the illustrations and I love the timeless story.  Grace seems to have fallen in love with it, too.

The second book, The Spirit of Christmas, was given to Grace by Kellie, Blake and Anna last Christmas.  It's another wonderful book by Nancy Tillman (we have three of them now).  Grace loves the songs that are interlaced with the storyline.  Now when we read other books, she asks me to sing them as well.

Eileen's Baby Shower

Our friends Eileen and Greg are having their first baby--a little boy.  Baby Monroe is due at the end of December.  We don't know his name yet, but we're really excited to find out, and to meet him for the first time.  Today was Eileen's baby shower, thrown by my mother-in-law, Sharron.  It was a beautiful shower and was really special because Eileen's mom, who is visiting from Venezuela, got to be part of the festivities. And I got to be the designated photographer, which was fun for me and annoying for everyone else..

I love bellies

Cookies

We've had an afternoon filled with gingerbread.  It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work.  Somewhere in our most recent move, I misplaced my KitchenAid mixer, so I made the cookies by hand.  I stumbled upon this recipe for gingerbread cookies, and for the most part, I really like how it turned out.  I wish I had taken them out a little sooner--I like gingerbread a little more on the chewy side.

When Grace woke up from her nap this afternoon, I had the dough chilled and ready to go.  We've been watching a lot of Food Network lately, and Grace has been very, very busy in her kitchen.  She got right to work on her dough - kneading, rolling, and most importantly, tasting.  Then I brought out the flour, and things went to an entirely new level.  It was fun.  Not so fun to clean up, but Grace had a great time flouring her work surface, eating a little, and then going back for more flour.  She repeated this about 84 times.

After dinner we decorated our cookies.  By this time Dave was home, so he got to join in on the fun (until he fell asleep at the table anyway) too.
